A summertime family session in Durham, North Carolina

One of the questions I get asked the most is, "Tierney, what should we wear for our family photos?" and that's a great question to ask! You've invested some money into these photos, you're about to invest time as well so they need to be perfect! Well today, I am going to give you some helpful tips and tricks for picking out the perfect outfits for family photographs!

 1. Feel Free to Bring Along Two Outfits

I recommend bring along a more formal outfit as well as a casual one! For the formal outfit for women, I always recommend a flowy maxi dress or skirt. This will give your photos such a soft, feminine look and it adds SO MUCH MOVEMENT to the photographs too! For guys, I recommend a dressing up. If your wife is wearing a more formal dress, you should probably wear suit or at least a nice collared shirt with a tie. I also recommend close toed shoes (particularly for guys)

Tip for women: Wear something that will accentuate your waistline, and that will give you shape. Right now, oversized sweaters, blouses, dresses are very in, but they take away from your figure and don't create flattering pictures.

2. Pick a color scheme and stick with it!

I recommend picking two-three colors for outfits. Neutrals such as blush, tans, link pinks, faint blues and teals, creams, grays and whites will always result in more of a light and airy look to your images. I am also a big fan of pastels! These colors photograph softer and more classically! I highly recommend staying from everyone wearing a black or white top.The goal is COORDINATING outfits instead of MATCHING! If one person is wearing white that is fine, but the whole family showing up in white buttons and dark wash jeans may not be the best. Plus, your family's personality can really shine through with your outfits!

3. Be mindful of patterns!

I'm not saying don't wear patterns at all, but be mindful of the ones you do choose to wear. It's best to avoid wearing patterns that are smaller then a dime as these patterns create very odd digital effects in the camera. I also recommend not wearing graphic tees or anything with writing on it.

4. Wear something that makes you feel comfortable!

Ladies, I recommend that you wear something that flatters the parts of you that you love the most and also allows you to be extremely confident! If you are uncomfortable when you look in the mirror (having to suck in and only like the way you look from one angle), then that outfit probably isn't the best for these photographs. I want you to feel totally confident and relaxed at your session If you're loving your outfit and feeling confident in it, you'll seriously love your photographs that much more!
