WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT

A summertime family session in Durham, North Carolina

One of the questions I get asked the most is, "Tierney, what should we wear for our family photos?" and that's a great question to ask! You've invested some money into these photos, you're about to invest time as well so they need to be perfect! Well today, I am going to give you some helpful tips and tricks for picking out the perfect outfits for family photographs!

 1. Feel Free to Bring Along Two Outfits

I recommend bring along a more formal outfit as well as a casual one! For the formal outfit for women, I always recommend a flowy maxi dress or skirt. This will give your photos such a soft, feminine look and it adds SO MUCH MOVEMENT to the photographs too! For guys, I recommend a dressing up. If your wife is wearing a more formal dress, you should probably wear suit or at least a nice collared shirt with a tie. I also recommend close toed shoes (particularly for guys)

Tip for women: Wear something that will accentuate your waistline, and that will give you shape. Right now, oversized sweaters, blouses, dresses are very in, but they take away from your figure and don't create flattering pictures.

2. Pick a color scheme and stick with it!

I recommend picking two-three colors for outfits. Neutrals such as blush, tans, link pinks, faint blues and teals, creams, grays and whites will always result in more of a light and airy look to your images. I am also a big fan of pastels! These colors photograph softer and more classically! I highly recommend staying from everyone wearing a black or white top.The goal is COORDINATING outfits instead of MATCHING! If one person is wearing white that is fine, but the whole family showing up in white buttons and dark wash jeans may not be the best. Plus, your family's personality can really shine through with your outfits!

3. Be mindful of patterns!

I'm not saying don't wear patterns at all, but be mindful of the ones you do choose to wear. It's best to avoid wearing patterns that are smaller then a dime as these patterns create very odd digital effects in the camera. I also recommend not wearing graphic tees or anything with writing on it.

4. Wear something that makes you feel comfortable!

Ladies, I recommend that you wear something that flatters the parts of you that you love the most and also allows you to be extremely confident! If you are uncomfortable when you look in the mirror (having to suck in and only like the way you look from one angle), then that outfit probably isn't the best for these photographs. I want you to feel totally confident and relaxed at your session If you're loving your outfit and feeling confident in it, you'll seriously love your photographs that much more!

BOYCE FARMS, RALEIGH, NC MATERNITY SESSION| THE MORRISEYS

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of taking Melissa (of the fashion and beauty blog Mix and Match Mel) and Dan's maternity photos at Boyce Farms in Raleigh, NC. They opted to have the session at the Christmas tree farm, and Boyce farms offered us the perfect location for this! If you're still in the market for a Christmas tree, I'd definitely recommend them!

Dan and Melissa are expecting their first baby, "Trinity" right around Valentine's Day. I'm so very excited for them as the embark on this new adventure!

DURHAM, NC NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHS| BABY ASHER

Last week, I had the privilege of taking newborn photos of baby Asher and his sweet family! These guys are familiar faces on the blog. In fact, you may have seen Jon and Kristen's Maternity session on the blog just a few weeks ago!

I have known Kristen just about my whole life, and we've been friends for that long! So seeing her with her husband and two boys is fun! What I love most about this session was the bond between Andrew and Asher. You can tell Andrew is crazy about his little brother and is gonna watch our for him. These two will definitely grow up to be best buds :)

Also, I want to mention keep Kristen's mom in your thoughts and prayers. Recently, her mom was diagnosed with a malignant, inoperable brain tumor. This is the sweetest family ,and I know they would appreciate your thoughts and prayers! Also, I'm going to leave a link to her fundraising page in case you are able to help financially.

WRAL AZALEA GARDENS FAMILY PHOTOS| DANYELLE AND PAISLEY

When Danyelle reached out to me early in the fall to take her and Paisley's pictures again I was so stoked! Last year, when I first met them, we did a fun session in downtown Raleigh! We decided this time around, that the Azalea Gardens would be the perfect location for this. When we got to the shoot, Paisley's best friend was there too so we got some adorable best friend pictures!
